They’ve Got Next: The 40 Under 40—By The Numbers

July 14, 2021, 8:46 AM UTC

In our first law firm recognition special report, “They’ve Got Next: The 40 Under 40,” we focused first on highlighting the many achievements of these 40 young attorneys, who are winning for their clients and leading in their law firms and beyond. But in a nod to our data-driven tradition at Bloomberg Law, we also wanted to highlight a few fun factoids that will give you a peek into our class — from a quick look at which practice areas and law schools boast the highest numbers of honorees, to where our 40 Under 40 class are based around the country. And if you’re also curious to know about the most popular songs on this group’s summer playlists, (“Wheels on the Bus,” you say?) read on.

Top Practice Areas and Law Schools

The law school with the highest representation for our 40 Under 40 class is Harvard Law School, with seven honorees, followed by Cornell Law School, NYU School of Law and Yale Law School, which tie with three honorees each. Next up are Duke University School of Law, Georgetown University Law Center, UC Berkeley Law, UCLA School of Law and the University of Virginia School of Law, which tie with two honorees each.

The Most Popular Artists & Songs On Our Honorees’ Summer Playlists

Many of us have appreciation for various genres of music. So it won’t seem strange that Taylor Swift ranked right up there with Marvin Gaye on the artists that honorees picked most often when we asked them, just for fun, what was on their summer music playlists. (They were each picked twice.) As for the most popular songs, we found it delightful that “Wheels on the Bus” held its own with “California Love” by Tupac feat. Dr. Dre. (Each of those songs was picked twice, along with lots of other childrens’ songs. We salute all of our young lawyer parents in the pool!)

All Across the U.S.A.

It’s probably no surprise to most legal observers that many of our honorees come from major legal markets — New York and Washington, D.C. are the home locales of 25 honorees, or nearly 63% of our pool. But more than 37% of our group is based in other top areas for legal talent that include San Francisco, Dallas, Los Angeles and Minneapolis, making for a geographically diverse pool.

Here's where our "They've Got Next: The 40 Under 40" honorees are based.

Finally, let’s tip our hats to our skilled graphic designers: Nnaemeke Offodile, who created our eye-catching 40 Under 40 main graphic, and Jonathan Hurtarte, who executed the vision for our 40 Q&As and concept art for our sidebars “They’ve Got Next: By the Numbers” and “What Key Legal Industry Leaders Said About Our 40 Under 40 Class” based on Offodile’s central theme and our wonderfully collaborative discussions. Thank you. This project is possible because of all of you.
