Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) is blocked from deploying the National Guard to Memphis while state and local officials challenge the troops’ presence, a state judge ruled.
The record shows the National Guard’s deployment in Memphis is meant to support public safety and law enforcement efforts, but those aren’t among the listed “emergency conditions” under state law that permit the governor to call troops in, Chancellor Patricia Head Moskal said. Her Monday order filed in Tennessee Chancery Court granted the plaintiffs a preliminary injunction.
