Simpson Thacher & Bartlett elected corporate partner Alden Millard to serve as the firm’s new chairman, succeeding Bill Dougherty to lead the more than 1,000-lawyer firm.
Millard is a Simpson Thacher lifer who joined the firm in 1996 and held numerous leadership roles before gaining the top spot, including a three-year term as an administrative partner in charge of the firm’s day-to-day operations.
His key clients include the Blackstone Group and First Reserve Corporation. Millard has advised private equity giants including, the Carlyle Group and Hellman & Friedman.
Simpson Thacher is one of the elite corporate deal firms with a prominent private equity practice highlighted by the firm’s long-time relationship as Blackstone’s go-to counsel.
The firm’s revenue grew more than 20% last year to more than $2 billion for the first time, according to AmLaw. Profits per equity partner rose 14% to just shy of $6 million.
Dougherty, also a New York-based corporate partner, led the firm since 2013. He registered back-to-back years of 20% revenue growth before handing over the reins.
