The US Sentencing Commission voted on Wednesday to approve sweeping amendments to the advisory guidelines governing sentencing ranges for federal offenders.
If Congress takes no action and the amendments take effect, they would address a range of issues including compassionate release, career offender enhancements, firearms, and fake pills. They would also resolve some circuit splits.
The commission declined, however, to vote on an anticipated amendment that would have prohibited judges from treating acquitted conduct as relevant conduct for purposes of calculating the sentencing guidelines range.
