Senate Confirms David Bernhardt to Lead Interior Department

The Senate confirmed David Bernhardt on April 11 to be secretary of the Interior, putting a former energy and natural resources lobbyist in charge of the agency that oversees drilling, grazing and other activities on public land and in federal waters.

Bernhardt, the department’s acting secretary since Ryan Zinke department stepped down in January amid ethics questions, was confirmed on a 56-41 vote.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called Bernhardt “a well-qualified steward of our nation’s public lands and resources.”
