Roku Wins Second Chance to Wipe Out Universal Electronics Patent

Roku Inc. will get another shot to ax a Universal Electronics Inc. remote-control patent that’s part of the rivals’ broader intellectual property fight.

The Federal Circuit wiped out an administrative tribunal’s decision upholding Universal’s patent on a home theater remote-control system in the face of a Roku challenge. The court said Tuesday the Patent Trial and Appeal Board erred in interpreting a term in US Patent No. 10,325,426, on the way to deeming the patent not obvious in light of two previously published inventions.
