Rite Aid Nabs Humana Vice President Kell for Compliance Post

Dec. 21, 2021, 7:59 PM

Rite Aid Corp. has hired LaShon Kell from Humana Inc. as senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer.

Kell in her new role oversees company-wide audit and compliance programs. The Camp Hill, Pa.-based drugstore chain has more than 2,000 locations across 17 states.

As a Humana associate vice president, she led the groups responsible for conducting and supervising internal investigations and handled litigation relating to healthcare fraud. She spent more than six years at the Louisville, Ky.-based managed health care company.

Kell’s hire comes after court records disclosed in August that Rite Aid reached an agreement with two Ohio counties over allegations that the chain played a role in the opioid epidemic that killed thousands of people. The company agreed to pay more than $3 million, contingent on Rite Aid winning a coverage dispute with insurers, Bloomberg News reported in October, citing people familiar with the matter.

In 2020, Rite Aid hired Paul Gilbert, former legal chief at LifePoint Health Inc., as its top legal officer to succeed former general counsel James Comitale, who had worked at Rite Aid for more than 23 years. Gilbert had been a health care, life sciences and corporate services partner at Epstein Becker, which he joined in December 2017 after a decade as chief legal officer for LifePoint Health.

Prior to her time at Humana, Kell worked for Halliburton Co.’s anti-corruption and international compliance group, where she was an assistant general counsel. She also spent five years with Bracewell as senior counsel in its white collar and litigation group and five years as an associate at Venable in is securities enforcement and white-collar crime group.

Her first legal job was as an enforcement attorney with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The legal recruiting firm Major, Lindsey & Africa handled Kell’s placement at Rite Aid.
