Reed Smith has hired Ryan T. Purpura, chair of McGuireWoods’ energy practice, as a partner in the firm’s global energy and natural resources industry group.
Purpura joins Reed Smith’s Pittsburgh office, where he will continue to represent oil and gas companies in M&A matters, and private equity and hedge funds in cross-border energy and commodities deals.
Purpura represents many companies in Texas and the Appalachian shale area. He said he made the switch to Reed Smith in large part because of the firm’s international footprint. Private equity funds and international investors have filled the void as big bank lenders have begun to back away from shale in recent years, he said.
“One of the things that drew me to Reed Smith was being able to work with teams in London and Singapore,” Purpura said. “To be able to be a part of a global energy practice particularly with a deep bench on the commodities side is something I’m really excited about.”
Purpura’s practice focuses on upstream oil and gas companies, but he also has experience in the full supply and distribution chain as well as the structuring of joint ventures in the industry. Before joining McGuireWoods, Purpura served as in-house counsel for LINN Energy and Consol Energy, and is currently outside general counsel to several exploration and production and midstream companies.
“Ryan is a perfect fit for our overall growth strategy, which remains focused on our industry groups,” Ron Francis, managing partner of Reed Smith’s Pittsburgh office, said in a statement. “He enhances our corporate practice, especially in the private equity sector, and our overall energy capabilities.”
A representative for McGuireWoods did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
