Privacy Advocates Push Newsom to Approve Browser Opt-Out Mandate

Privacy advocates are lobbying Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign the nation’s first requirement for web browsers to offer data opt-out signals, despite his veto of a similar bill last year.

Newsom (D) has until Oct. 13 to act on the measure (AB 566) by Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal (D), which cleared the state legislature earlier this month. Californians would be able to easily turn on signals through browsers like Google Chrome that automatically tell websites not to sell or share their data under the measure, instead of clicking on buttons or links at every site they visit.
