Philadelphia Union Hires Ex-NBA Lawyer Montoya for Chief Role

The Philadelphia Union, one of the leading teams in the top tier of US professional soccer, has hired Carlos Montoya as its new general counsel.

Montoya, a former deputy general counsel for the National Basketball Association’s Philadelphia 76ers, confirmed via email that he started Sept. 6 as the Union’s top lawyer. He most recently was legal chief for software company Performance Horizon Inc.

The Union is controlled by an ownership group led by real estate developer Jay Sugarman that last year sold a 5% stake in the club to NBA star Kevin Durant. The team is currently in first place ...
