Open-Source AI Models Boost Competition, DOJ Antitrust Head Says

Open artificial intelligence models that developers are able to use with few or no restrictions are critical to a competitive market in the rapidly evolving technology, a senior Justice Department official said.

“If done correctly, a truly open model can promote competition by making available a key piece of input into AI products,” said DOJ antitrust chief Gail Slater at a conference in New York Thursday. “The ability to build on open foundation models to develop products removes a significant barrier to entry for startups” and smaller technology companies.
