Norfolk Southern Makes Goldman Sachs Alum Railroad’s Top Lawyer

Norfolk Southern Corp. appointed Nabanita Nag as its chief legal officer and senior vice president to succeed Lorri Kleine who is set to retire.

The promotion was announced Thursday by the company in conjunction with two executive management additions. Michael McClellan is Norfolk Southern’s new senior vice president and chief strategy officer, and Clay Moore was made vice president and controller.

Norfolk Southern operates 19,420 route miles across 22 Eastern states and the District of Columbia.

Nag, prior to joining the company in 2020, was vice president and corporate counsel at Prudential Financial. Before that, she was vice president and associate general counsel at Goldman Sachs.

Her first job out of law school was as an associate at Shearman & Sterling, focusing on banking, bank regulatory, capital markets and structured finance.

As Norfolk Southern’s general counsel for corporate, Nag was responsible for Securities Exchange Commission reporting and compliance, corporate finance, corporate and board governance, shareholder engagement, and oversight for cybersecurity and data privacy matters.

“Nabanita’s deep corporate background and over 15 years of legal experience with Fortune 100 companies provide her with the skills and experience to lead the strong team in our law department,” Norfolk Southern president Alan Shaw said in a statement announcing her appointment.

“From her time in the financial services sector, she understands the complexity of working within a heavily regulated industry,” he added.
