New Jersey Says Its Anti-Bias Law Extends to AI Decision-Making

New Jersey on Thursday issued guidance saying its longstanding anti-discrimination law covers AI-enabled bias in housing and employment, joining other states around the country looking to address discrimination in automated technology.

The New Jersey Law Against Discrimination prohibits automated decision-making tools from discriminating on the basis of race, sex, and other characteristics, according to the guidance from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

The guidance was released as part of a new “Civil Rights and Technology Initiative” launched by the office’s civil rights division, according to a news release.
