Nervous Nonprofits Brace for Trump-Driven Criminal Tax Scrutiny

Nonprofits are double-checking that they’re properly monitoring donations and grants—and even beefing up their connections with Congress—to ensure they can withstand the Trump administration’s expected increase in criminal scrutiny of tax-exempt organizations.

The moves come as President Donald Trump and his allies have indicated plans to crack down on nonprofits that could be funding terrorism or political violence. Trump in an executive order directed the IRS to refer those organizations to the Justice Department for investigation and possible prosecution.
