Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has a new chief legal officer.

The media company announced on Monday that it has hired Lesley Freeman from HBO, where she served as senior vice president, legal affairs, for nearly 10 years, according to her LinkedIn profile.

In taking the position, she moves from Los Angeles to New York, and replaces outgoing General Counsel Scott Packman, MGM said in a press release. Packman will step down from his post in August after 14 years with MGM and Freeman will report to the company’s chairman Gary Barber.

“Scott shared with me that he was interested in moving on some time ago and we appreciate his flexibility in staying on during a transition,” said Barber, in a statement. “We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Packman served as General Counsel of MGM since 2005 and worked alongside Deputy General Counsel Cheryl Rodman .

Freeman, a 1997 graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, practiced at the law firm O’Melveny & Myers for nearly ten years before joining HBO. At the company, she was responsible for legal matters around film programming, digital program distribution, home entertainment, joint ventures, investments and mergers and acquisitions.

An MGM spokeswoman said Freeman was unavailable for an interview on the transition.
