- Firm claims blank check company failed to pay legal fees
- Suit ask Delaware court to recognize Hong Kong orders
Mayer Brown’s Hong Kong partnership is suing a US blank check company for $2 million in unpaid bills.
The lawsuit filed Thursday in Delaware Superior Court seeks to compel payment from Sagaliam Acquisition Corp. and Sagaliam Sponsor LLC, each of which are former clients registered in the state.
Mayer Brown wants the court to recognize and execute separate judgments from the Hong Kong region that ordered the companies to pay a combined $2 million for “legal services rendered, plus accrued interests and costs.” It wasn’t clear what legal work Mayer Brown performed and why it was handled in Hong Kong.
The firm and its counsel did not immediately return a request for comment on Friday. Sagaliam could not immediately be reached.
Mayer Brown is an international firm with separate legal practices throughout the world. The firm on May 2 announced plans to separate from its Hong Kong operation, which comprises 160 lawyers. The firm did not offer a reason for the split but said it plans to operate through a new partnership in the region.
Mayer Brown finished 2023 with more than 1,800 lawyers and revenue topping $1.9 billion, according to data from the American Lawyer.
The case is Mayer Brown v. Sagaliam Acquisition Corp. et al, Del. Super. Ct., N24C-05-097, 5/9/24
