Louisiana Accuses Roblox of Enabling Sexual Abuse of Minors (2)

Roblox Corp.'s products are used to facilitate and distribute child sexual abuse material and the exploitation of minor children, the Louisiana attorney general said in a lawsuit filed against the online game maker.

The suit comes after Roblox joined a consortium of other tech companies to create tools to improve online safety for children. A new AI-powered application called Robust Open Online Safety Tools will identify, review and report child sexual abuse material and make core safety technologies more accessible.

But Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill (R) said in a statement that because there isn’t an age verification or parental permission method when a person signs up to use Roblox, “users can easily say they are younger or older than their actual age—allowing child predators to pose as children and for children to bypass any age requirement.” Children still have access to games that are “filled with sexually explicit material and simulated sexual activity such as child gang rape.”

“The assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is categorically untrue,” a Roblox spokesperson said. The company dedicates “vast resources to supporting a safe infrastructure including advanced technology and 24/7 human moderation,” it said.

“While no system is perfect, Roblox has implemented rigorous safeguards—such as restrictions on sharing personal information, links, and user-to-user image sharing—to help protect our community,” the spokesperson said.

The company said it’s “committed to working with Attorney General Murrill to keep kids safe.”

Louisiana’s complaint points to Roblox’s “deliberate failure to implement effective safety measures to protect child users from well-documented predatory threats, along with its ongoing failure to warn parents and children of the foreseeable dangers posed by its platform.” It was filed Thursday in the Louisiana 21st Judicial District Court.

The state says Roblox violated its unfair trade practices act, calling its business methods unscrupulous, oppressive, and contrary to public policy. It alleges Roblox created a negligent and public nuisance, because its games don’t have adequate notice concerning the risk of exposure to predators.

It further accuses Roblox of unjust enrichment—Murrill’s statement notes that the company’s shares “have more than doubled this year and have advanced over 115% year to date.”

Louisiana seeks an injunction and damages.

The case is Louisiana v. Roblox Corp., La. Dist. Ct., No. 188950, complaint filed 8/14/25.
