LA Lawyer Sanctioned After Opposing Counsel Claims AI Misuse

A Los Angeles-based attorney accused of submitting a legal brief with AI-generated fabrications must cough up $7,500 and may need to answer to the California State Bar, a state appellate court ordered this week.

Lawyer Fahim Farivar filed an opening brief that contained fabricated quotes and misstated cases resembling AI-generated hallucinations, according to a motion to strike it by opposing counsel at Novian & Novian. Regardless of whether AI was used, the panel of justices reasoned in their order Monday, “the signatory attorney is responsible for the content of the brief and subject to sanctions for inaccuracies it contains.”
