The world is falling dangerously behind what’s needed to combat global warming, a “moral failure and deadly negligence” that threatens to unleash greater destruction and expose billions to unlivable conditions, UN Secretary-General António Guterres told nations ahead of climate negotiations in Brazil.
Guterres’ warning — delivered Thursday at a summit of government ministers and heads of state in the Amazonian city of Belém — comes as the world is on track to overshoot a goal of limiting warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, with some nations dialing back climate policies and some companies retreating from net-zero pledges.
