Jenner Says Justice Department Pulled Lawyer Security Clearance

May 15, 2025, 1:02 PM UTC

The Justice Department suspended a Jenner & Block lawyer’s security clearance as a result of President Donald Trump’s executive order against the firm, according to a new court filing.

The unnamed lawyer learned Tuesday that the clearance was suspended, Jenner said in the filing in a federal court in Washington. The attorney was made aware of the situation during proceedings in a criminal case in which the firm is defending a client, according to Jenner.

The firm was among a handful hit with executive orders from Trump over their ties to investigations and cases against the president. Jenner is seeking a court order blocking the order, which revoked employees’ security clearances, limited their access to federal buildings, and threatened their clients’ government contracts.

A federal court in Washington has already frozen parts of the order—not including the security clearances provision—and is set to rule on a request for a permanent injunction scrapping the entire directive.

This development “further underscores the need for the permanent injunctive relief that Jenner has requested,” Michael Attanasio, who is representing Jenner in the suit challenging the executive order, said in a letter to District Judge John Bates.

WilmerHale, another firm hit with an executive order, on Tuesday said two of its lawyers were told by a government agency that their security clearances were suspended. WilmerHale is also challenging the legality of the order against it in a separate case.

The case is Jenner & Block v. U.S. Department of Justice, D.D.C., 1:25-cv-00916, 5/14/25.
