Rep. Darrell Issa used a hearing on foreign abuse of US courts Tuesday to press for legislation that would require disclosure of litigation funding in civil lawsuits.
Issa (R-Calif.) said requiring plaintiffs disclose backing from outside investors is fair given that defendants already share financial information such as insurance policies under court rules.
“In civil matters that often is a one-way street,” said Issa, chair of a House Judiciary Subcommittee panel that held the hearing. Disclosure “is not always the case” for the plaintiff, he said.
