HILL ENERGY BRIEFING: Climate Fight Focus in EPW Hearing

Republicans are trying to put the Biden administration’s climate efforts on the defensive amid rising energy prices, but expect Democrats on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee to throw the spotlight on another rising cost—that of climate inaction, Dean Scott reports.

Some electricity providers, including cooperatives, consider President Joe Biden’s push for a carbon-neutral grid by 2035 increasingly unrealistic after the Russian invasion of Ukraine sent already rising oil, coal and other energy prices soaring.

“Achieving 100% carbon-free electricity generation by 2035 is an overly ambitious goal,” according to prepared remarks by National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Jim Matheson. ...
