Google, Chatbot Maker to Face Bulk of Suit Over Teen Suicide

A federal judge declined to dismiss several tort claims involving allegations that Character Technologies marketed predatory chatbots to minors that encouraged inappropriate conversations and led to a teen’s death by suicide.

In a novel case regarding what constitutes a design defect for consumer-oriented AI products, Judge Anne C. Conway of the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida allowed a variety of tort claims, including wrongful death, to proceed. She dismissed an intentional infliction of emotional distress claim.
