Hogan Lovells cybersecurity partner Peter Marta is heading to Goodwin as it looks to expand its data and privacy offerings.
Marta is joining the firm as a partner in its data, privacy and cybersecurity practice in New York, the firm announced Tuesday.
Marta previously was the global head of cybersecurity and security and investigations legal for JPMorgan Chase and Co. He left the bank for Hogan Lovells in 2019.
Goodwin “has one of the longest standing cybersecurity practices of any Am Law 50 firm and it has a really a stellar reputation in this space,” Marta said in an interview. “I viewed it as a tremendous opportunity to join a leading practice and to help continue to build out a truly world class team,” he said.
Marta advises companies and boards on cyber and data risk management and governance, cyber incident preparedness and response, insider threats, regulatory strategy, and government and internal investigations. At JPMorgan, he was head counsel to the firm’s chief information security officer and its chief security officer where he provided cyber-related legal support to the bank’s senior leaders.
He spent more than seven years as a operations officer for a US intelligence agency earlier in his career.
“Now, more than ever, companies need guidance on the constantly evolving cybersecurity threat landscape and managing related risks,” Steve Charkoudian, chair of Goodwin’s data, privacy and cybersecurity practice said in a statement.
“Pete’s unique experience, both in the private sector and in government, enables him to help clients navigate these challenges, understand regulatory expectations, and find practical solutions,” he said.
Cybersecurity ranks at the top of the list of overall risks and challenges facing organizations and affects “each and every client of Goodwin,” Marta said, adding that he is looking forward to working with his new colleagues—which includes litigators, former federal prosecutors and in-house lawyers—and meeting Goodwin’s client base.
“For those reasons, I’m super excited to join the Goodwin team and I think that really will make us stand out in the industry,” he said.
