Goodwin Procter is opening an office in Orange County with three litigators from Jones Day.
Richard Grabowski, John Vogt, and Ryan Ball are joining the firm as partners in Newport Beach, California, the firm announced Tuesday.
The trio brings litigation practices focused on cybersecurity, privacy, technology, trade secrets, and consumer financial services. In 2023, they helped Experian Data Corp. beat a multi-million dollar enforcement action over a data breach—one of the largest such cases ever to proceed to trial.
The Newport Beach office boosts Boston-founded Goodwin’s presence on the West Coast. The firm already has offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Silicon Valley.
Grabowski, who has practiced in Orange County his entire career, helped build out Jones Day’s office there and has served as lead counsel in more than 100 federal and state consumer class actions and regularly leads parallel investigations by the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general.
Goodwin’s growth and focus is the perfect fit for the trio’s practice, he said. “Our goal is really to be the leading cybersecurity and privacy litigation practice in the US and overseas, and we think we can really bring that to fruition at Goodwin,” Grabowski said.
Vogt has spent more than 25 years defending hundreds of nationwide class actions involving data breaches, tracking technologies, wiretap statutes, and regulatory enforcement. Ball, who joined Jones Day in 2018 from Kasowitz Benson Torres, has advised public and private companies in complex litigation and government investigations and is at the forefront of major cybersecurity and consumer matters.
“Their elite trial, investigations and litigation skills, combined with our industry-immersed strategy, are a powerful combination that is unique in the market,” said Goodwin chair Anthony McCusker in a statement.
