An ex-litigator and current Girl Scouts of America general counsel Jennifer Rochon was confirmed on Wednesday to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
A handful of Senate Republicans supported her in the Democratic-led chamber, which cleared the nomination 51-47.
Rochon, a rare nominee from the general counsel ranks, fits with President Joe Biden’s track record of appointing judges with varied professional backgrounds. A number of nominees with public defender experience, for instance, have been named to the judiciary by Biden.
Rochon is a New York University law graduate, former Peace Corps volunteer, and clerk to former Judge Maryanne Trump Barry of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the White House said.
She was a litigation partner at Kramer Levin before becoming the first general counsel of the Girl Scouts in 2013.
The Senate also confirmed Sunshine Sykes to the Central District of California, 51-45, and Trina Thompson, 51-44, to the Northern District. Both received some Republican support. The Central District includes Los Angeles, while the Northern District includes San Francisco.
