Aug. 16, 2017, 4:21 PM

The giant specialty insurer Assurant Inc. has announced the results of an internal reorganization of its legal department that puts Carey Roberts as its new chief legal officer, executive vice president and secretary.

Roberts, 46, will join the company at the end of October from Marsh & McLennan where she served as deputy general counsel, corporate secretary and chief compliance officer. She also spent 17 years as a corporate partner at Covington & Burling.

She replaces Bart Schwartz, 65, who announced his retirement in January after a decade at the helm. At the time, Assurant also promoted Gregory DeChurch to senior vice president and deputy general counsel; and it named Doris Vigo as senior vice president and chief compliance officer.

Like Roberts, Schwartz also previously held the title of deputy general counsel and corporate secretary of Marsh & McLennan, and before that spent time at Debevoise & Plimpton, Skadden Arps and as general counsel of what became Willis Towers Watson. According to a press release, he will stay on at the company until the end of the year to help with the transition.

The Fortune 500 company, which sells home owner insurance, flood insurance, renter insurance, consumer product warranties and many other products, has approximately $30 billion in assets and $6 billion in revenue.

A spokesperson for the company declined to provide any comment for this article.
