Fried Frank Lawyer Sues Unum Units for Covid Disability Pay (1)

A derivatives attorney for Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP filed a lawsuit against Unum Group subsidiaries, saying he was wrongly denied $50,000 in monthly disability benefits on account of Covid-related ailments.

The lawsuit challenges decisions by First Unum Life Insurance Co. and Provident Life & Casualty Insurance Co. declining to pay disability benefits for medical conditions that allegedly arose after the attorney’s hospitalization with Covid in August 2021. The insurers relied on cursory reviews by biased doctors who never examined the attorney and who overlooked substantial medical evidence demonstrating his disability, according to the lawsuit.
