Ex Morgan Stanley CCO to Lead Legal at Rockefeller Capital (1)

Oct. 22, 2020, 5:13 PMUpdated: Oct. 22, 2020, 9:36 PM

Rockefeller Capital Management announced Thursday that William “Billy” Fenrich, a former Morgan Stanley chief compliance officer, will join the company on Nov. 2 as general counsel and a member of the executive committee.

The New York-based financial services company was launched in 2018 after acquiring Rockefeller & Co., Inc., the Rockefeller family’s multi-family office. The company has offices across the U.S. and most recently opened an outpost in Arizona.

“From a legal standpoint, the firm clearly has impeccable values and integrity, and prioritizes clients, and appreciates and values the important role that legal and compliance play in carrying out the firm’s culture,” Fenrich told Bloomberg Law. “And the Rockefeller name is something that was very attractive. It’s, in my view, synonymous with trust, with legacy, and then also with evolution and growth.”

Fenrich replaces former general counsel Jonathan Eisenberg, who became of counsel for the company in June.

“As we continue to grow our firm across all of our businesses, outstanding legal counsel and leadership are essential pillars of our long-term success,” said Gregory Fleming, president and CEO of Rockefeller Capital Management in an Oct. 22 statement.

Fenrich joins Rockefeller after doing independent consulting and legal work after leaving his position as the chief legal officer of AQR Capital Management, based in Greenwich, Conn., at the end of 2019. Prior to that, he was the global chief compliance officer for New York-based Morgan Stanley for around a year.

He began his career at Davis Polk & Wardwell where he made partner in 2005. The firm has often been a feeder for legal and compliance leadership at Morgan Stanley.

Rockefeller has advised companies like Montreal-based plane and rail manufacturer Bombardier Inc. and automotive parts supplier BorgWarner Inc. on billion-dollar deals. It recently worked with sustainable shoe company Allbirds, based in San Francisco.

On Wednesday, Rockefeller also announced the addition of Emiliano Román as managing director and head of consumer and retail in the firm’s strategic advisory practice. Román was formerly a managing director at Morgan Stanley.

In April, Rockefeller hired Brian Riley from San Francisco-based First Republic Bank to head its office in the city and to be managing director of the Pacific Northwest division of Rockefeller Private Wealth Management.
