Fast-Growing Manulife Hires Finance Vet Coyne as New Top Lawyer

Manulife Financial Corp., an asset management giant expanding into private credit, is hiring Michael Coyne as its new general counsel, it said Thursday.

Coyne will start Sept. 1 at Manulife, succeeding legal chief James Gallagher, who is retiring after nearly a decade in the role. Manulife’s numerous insurance and financial services businesses use its name in Canada and Asia, while the Toronto-based company primarily does business in the US through Boston-based John Hancock, which it acquired in 2004.
