Court Drops Car-Sale Patent Appeal to Facilitate Settlement

The Federal Circuit agreed to let a New Jersey judge undo a ruling that wiped out a dozen online car-buying patents to clear the way for a settlement between the patents’ owner and lawsuit target Vroom Inc.

A panel of judges declined to opine on the “propriety or necessity of any vacatur” but nevertheless remanded the case so the district court could consider the appropriateness of erasing its 2022 decision invalidating the 12 patents belonging to Sidekick Technology LLC because they captured the abstract idea of gathering vehicle market and user data to facilitate a car transaction.
