Florida Supreme Court Justice John D. Couriel, a former litigator and GOP legislative candidate, has been selected by his fellow justices to a two-year stint as chief justice.
Couriel, 48, will begin his term as chief on July 1. He replaces another originalist appointee of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), Carlos G. Muñiz.
“I am grateful to my colleagues for their trust,” Couriel said, “and am indebted to the previous chief justices with whom I’ve served. I will do my best to serve the people of Florida as they so ably have.”
