London insurance law giant Clyde & Co is hiring 15 insurance and litigation partners from Sedgwick, the California-based firm that announced earlier this month that it is closing down operations.
The insurance partners represent U.S. and international insurance carriers, and corporate and public agencies and departments. Most are from Sedgwick’s offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Orange County. Some others are from its Chicago, New York and Miami offices.
The move will also include 65 other lawyers and staff, including a Kansas City, Mo., team that provides finance, information technology and other business services, according to Clyde & Co’s announcement Dec. 18.
“We have been growing in the United States for nearly 12 years and the addition of these 15 partners complements our existing west coast and national business,” said Simon Konsta, a Clyde & Co senior partner.
Prior to shutting its doors Sedgwick was among the 200 largest U.S. firms. It had been battling the slim margins in insurance business work, but couldn’t salvage its business despite cost cutting, alternative fee arrangements and searching for a merger partner. As a result, the nearly 85-year-old firm—it was founded in 1933—decided to shut its doors. Before the early December announcement, a number of partners had left for positions at other law firms. Clyde & Co is taking on the largest single group of attorneys and legal professionals.
“We’re proud to bring with us a team with strong experience and expertise across insurance lines as well as exceptional trial and litigation capabilities. We look forward to being able to hit the ground running,” said Ralph Guirgis, former chair of Sedgwick’s insurance division, who will be joining from Sedgwick’s Orange County office.
Among the 15 partners are four from Sedgwick’s San Francisco office, including Bruce D. Celebrezze, an insurance industry litigator who focuses on complex general liability work and commercial disputes for insurers and Alexander E. Potente, a trial lawyer who represents insurers in complex commercial insurance litigation matters.
Clyde & Co, which first expanded to the United States in 2006, now has ten offices and more than 350 people, including some 60 partners, in offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, Miami, Atlanta, San Francisco, Long Beach, Calif., New York, and Florham Park, N.J.
The firm focuses on insurance, infrastructure, trade and commodities, energy, and transportation. The United States is a core market for many of its clients, which include many American and international insurance carriers.
The Sedgwick partners will join Clyde & Co Jan. 1, 2018.
Other lawyers from Sedgwick’s London office have joined DAC Beachcroft.
