Chief Legal Officers Navigate More Work, More Financial Pressure

Corporate legal departments are increasingly overworked, squeezed between demands that they cut costs, and facing rising bills for outside counsel, according to a survey of chief legal officers across the globe.

The survey, by the Association of Corporate Counsel and Exterro, found that the workloads of 59% of CLOs had “increased significantly” or “somewhat increased” in the last year, with just 3% saying their workloads had eased. Workloads have grown as many departments have been charged with oversight of additional functions including compliance, privacy, and risk.
