Elisa Garcia is joining Macy’s, Inc. as chief legal officer, according to a statement from the retailer on Tuesday.
Garcia is stepping down as chief legal officer at Office Depot, Inc., where she’s been top lawyer since 2007. According to her LinkedIn profile , Garcia has also served as GC of Domino’s Pizza and as Philip Morris International’s regional counsel for Latin America.
The Macy’s statement also says Garcia, a native of New York, graduated from St. John’s University Law School and was an associate at Willkie Farr & Gallagher.
According to a report in Corporate Counsel , Office Depot simultaneously appointed Hilton Worldwide GC Kristin Campbell to its board of directors, but the appointment isn’t connected to Garcia’s departure:
On the same day Garcia resigned from Office Depot, that company named Kristin Campbell, general counsel of Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. and former GC of rival Staples Inc., to its board of directors. The timing appears to be a coincidence.
Campbell, a Goodwin Procter alum, has been GC at Hilton since 2011.
While at Office Depot, Garcia attempted to help Office Depot through a merger with Staples last year . A federal judge eventually blocked the tie-up in May . She joins Macy’s at a tough time for the company, financially: the stock price has tumbled recently following weak sales figures this summer.
Garcia succeeds Dennis Broderick at Macy’s. Broderick will retire as the company’s general counsel effective Oct. 1, 2016, after 29 years with the company.
Macy’s declined to comment. A request to Office Depot was not immediately returned.
