California Privacy Agency Cuts Back AI Rules Amid Tech Pressure

The California Privacy Protection Agency Friday scaled back its plan to limit how AI tools in the state can use personal data amid ramped up opposition from business lobbyists and state lawmakers.

The board narrowed key definitions to reduce the scope of the rules and eliminated ambitious requirements that would have restricted the use of personal data for targeted advertising and AI training. Agency staff also trimmed some business obligations around how companies document privacy risks.
