California Justice Liu Describes Experience with ‘Casual’ Racism

As an Asian American, California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu said he’s experienced “casual everyday racism” from when kids made fun of his lunch while growing up in Sacramento to later being mistaken for the server at “fancy receptions.”

Such experiences “becomes part of our social environment,” Liu said Friday at an event sponsored by San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin.

The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Liu discussed recent attacks against Asian Americans, as well as his experience as Barack Obama’s failed nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
