Bridgewater Associates LP, a hedge fund backed by billionaire Ray Dalio, saw former chief governance officer Nina Fletcher depart to join Yipit LLC as general counsel.
Fletcher, a former associate at Covington & Burling and Sullivan & Cromwell, spent nearly seven years in-house at Westport, Conn.-based Bridgewater, where she was most recently senior counsel. Fletcher confirmed in an email she started May 10 in her new legal chief role at Yipit.
The privately held company, which does business as YipitData, provides information to hedge funds, mutual funds, pension funds, and other institutional investors.
Legal recruiting firm Major, Lindsey & Africa was tapped earlier this year to find a general counsel for New York-based YipitData, whose previous legal chief, Nessia Sloane Kushner, left the company over a year ago.
Fletcher confirmed that she’s succeeded Kushner, now a senior adviser and member of the board for the Heckscher Foundation for Children, a New York-based nonprofit whose chairman and CEO is Kushner’s father, retired Cahill Gordon & Reindel partner Howard “Peter” Sloane.
Fletcher said she’s excited to be joining YipitData at an “exciting moment for alternative data.” The company, founded in 2010, is backed by Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm Norwest Venture Partners.
YipitData promoted senior counsel Ryan Melvin to director of business operations in January. In November, the company recruited former Starbucks Corp. data privacy and ethics program manager Nicole Sroka as a product and privacy counsel and added Amritha Donnellan, a former Norton Rose Fulbright litigator, as a compliance, contracts, and legal operations analyst, Fletcher said.
Mica Ruppin, a former naval intelligence researcher with the Israel Defense Forces, also joined YipitData last year as an associate counsel focused on corporate and commercial contracting matters, Fletcher said.
Bridgewater, which has coped with financial losses and staff layoffs during the past year, didn’t respond to a request for comment about whether Fletcher has been replaced. Nor did Bridgewater chief legal officer and corporate secretary Tracey Brady Yurko, or longtime chief compliance officer Helene Glotzer.
Bloomberg News reported in February that former Bridgewater general counsel John Halvey retired at the end of 2020 and was replaced as the hedge fund’s top lawyer by Yurko, who joined Bridgewater in 2012.
Bridgewater saw former senior counsel Gary Beeson and deputy general counsel Sylvia Khatcherian, a board member at legal technology company Reynen Court LLC, leave its ranks last September.
The hedge fund has posted a job listing for a senior counsel position.
