Block OpenAI For-Profit Conversion, California Petitioners Urge

A coalition of public interest nonprofits and labor advocates filed an administrative petition Wednesday with California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) to halt OpenAI Inc‘s transition to a for-profit business.

The collective of about 60 members, led by the San Francisco Foundation and LatinoProsperity, requested that Bonta file a legal action to ensure the AI developer’s charitable assets are accounted for before any restructuring can continue. Bonta is probing OpenAI’s proposed for-profit conversion, using his office’s powers to oversee compliance matters of nonprofits and protection of their assets.
