Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly defended a plan to make tech companies pay for publishing Australian journalism in the face of US and industry criticism.
Journalism is intellectual property and “should be valued as an important part of a democracy,” Albanese said Wednesday. Whether journalists worked for foreign or Australian media, he said, “someone shouldn’t be able to take your work and make a profit from it without payment.”
