Athletes, Not FTC, Should Sue NCAA for Pay Issues: Commissioners

Athletes, not the Federal Trade Commission, should be the ones to sue the NCAA over compensation for their name, image, and likeliness, FTC commissioners told a Senate panel.

“I would personally favor a private right of action,” Commissioner Rohit Chopra (D) told the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee Wednesday. “It is very hard to police some of these markets, and in some cases the players themselves may be well situated to vindicate their own rights,” he said.

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Joseph Simons (R) agreed with Chopra, telling the lawmakers that a private right of action “would be appropriate.” ...
