The US Energy Department delayed a key report on natural gas minutes before it was scheduled to be published Thursday, fueling concern that Elon Musk’s cost-cutting efforts will disrupt data closely watched by companies and traders.

Four minutes before a weekly report on gas stockpiles was due to be released, the Energy Information Administration — the Energy Department’s data agency — said it would be delayed. The data, which shows how much US gas inventories have risen or fallen, typically moves prices of the heating and power-plant fuel and is vital for traders trying to estimate demand.
