Butler Snow Attorneys Disqualified Over Fake AI Case Citations

Three Butler Snow LLP attorneys were disqualified from participating in a case after they signed off on a motion that contained several inaccurate case citations generated by artificial intelligence.

Citing the firm’s repeated internal warnings, controls, and policies about the risks of using AI, “the reality that this lapse in judgment presented in the most spectacularly unforced fashion underscores the need for more than a fine and reprimand,” US District Court for the Northern District of Alabama Judge Anna M. Manasco said in a Wednesday order.
