ANALYSIS: Victims of AI Voice Cloning Have Insufficient Remedies

AI technologies continue to advance at a rapid pace, and one particularly concerning development is voice cloning. Since voices are closely tied to personal identity, artistic expression, and commercial activities, AI’s ability to replicate voices with minimal effort can lead to serious harms—ranging from fraudulent calls to deepfake recordings.

Against this backdrop, individuals may look to various legal remedies for protection. However, the central question remains: Does the existing hodgepodge of laws afford adequate, enforceable rights for individuals whose voices have been illegally cloned? The answer is—for the time being—"no.”
