ANALYSIS: The New Iran Sanctions—Easier Said Than Done

Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran have resulted in major escalations of U.S. sanctions since May 2019. These sanctions are key U.S. actions against Iran’s regime during the ongoing national security crisis, but their significance does not guarantee their effectiveness, as more than a decade of experience with Iran sanctions demonstrates that the actual economic and strategic impact of certain sanctions can fall short of their symbolic value.
