ANALYSIS: The Arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou: Criminal Charges and Legal Precedents

Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei and daughter of the company’s founder, was arrested December 1 in Vancouver. Much of the reporting and commentary on the arrest has been focused through the lens of the ongoing trade war between the United States and China, despite the statement in court by Canada’s Crown prosecutor that the legal basis of the arrest was fraud related to violations of U.S. economic sanctions against Iran.
