ANALYSIS: Survey Results Hint at Legal Tech/Workload Disconnect

July 19, 2021, 6:16 PM

Initial results from Bloomberg Law’s Legal Technology 2021 Survey (currently taking responses) suggest that even though legal technologies are improving lawyers’ workflow, few respondents are actually experiencing a decrease in their amount of work.

According to last year’s survey, increased adoption and use of legal technologies in daily workflows provides benefits to employees such as reduced time on routine tasks and increased time on higher-level tasks. And initial results from Bloomberg Law’s Legal Technology 2021 Survey show that the benefits of legal tech use have continued, as nearly three-quarters of respondents report experiencing improved workflows over the past 12 months.

However, despite the added efficiencies that come with increased adoption and use of legal tech, only 19% of respondents say their amount of work has reduced in the past 12 months.

As organizations continue to adopt legal tech and streamline tasks, leadership should consider how they are leveraging these workflow improvements. Such efficiencies provide an opportunity for organizations to focus on changing the workplace for the better, such as helping to improve well-being and reducing burnout . And, to retain talent, organizations should recognize their employees’ achievements in building efficiencies and reducing costs, and respond by allowing the space for employees to learn new skills and even out the demands of work/life balance.
