ANALYSIS: DOJ China Initiative Shift Warns Universities and Labs

The China Initiative, a Department of Justice campaign to investigate and prosecute Chinese economic espionage, has surpassed 30 indictments and settlements since its debut. At its outset, the initiative focused on theft of intellectual property from U.S. businesses, and recently it has emphasized protecting scientific research from Chinese infiltration of U.S. universities and laboratories. University administrations and other organizations responsible for supervising scientific research in the United States must pay attention to the findings of the China Initiative to protect their work from misappropriation by Chinese interests, and to protect themselves from potential legal liability.
