The United Auto Workers’ historic strike of all three Detroit automakers is a rare tactic that stands to get a boost from recent, pro-union shifts in labor law.

Rather than focusing on one company as it has in the past, the UAW is striking at one plant for each automaker to start—a strategy that preserves union cash while leaving plenty of room to expand. It’s reminiscent of UAW’s late 1930s game plan, including the Flint, Mich., sit-down strike that won the UAW recognition from General Motors Co. in 1937, labor observers say.
