US ethane exports to China plunged to the lowest level ever recorded as the Trump administration keeps tight controls on cargoes headed to ports in the Asian nation amid ongoing trade tensions.
The US exported 57,000 barrels per day of ethane to China in June, according to energy analytics firm Vortexa. In 2024, China imported 230,000 barrels per day from the US, according to the US Energy Information Agency.
China depends almost entirely on the US for ethane, and using the petrochemical gas as a trade war bargaining chip has disrupted supply chains and redirected flows.
